NETFLIX ORDERS AMERICAN FERRERA DRAMEDY: Netflix is adapting an America Ferrera-produced digital series and turning it into a half-hour dramedy. The bilingual Latinx series Gente-fied focuses on the lives of three Mexican-American cousins in L.A., as they struggle to keep their dreams afloat and support their grandfather and his taco shop.
RATINGS FOR DONALD TRUMP’S STATE OF THE UNION UP: Donald Trump’s 82-minute State of the Union address—almost as long as Bill Clinton’s record-breaking 2000 SOTU—touched on a lot of issues, including the economy, the wall and the state of the union. In metered markets, CBS had a 4.6/7, taking the number #1 spot among the broadcast networks away from usual top dog NBC, Deadline reports. NBC nabbed a 4.5/7, while ABC snagged a 4.1/7 and FOX managed a 3.1/5.
THE SIMPSONS RENEWED: Fox renewed The Simpsons for seasons 31 and 32. When those seasons conclude, it will bring the show's episode tally to an astounding 713, solidifying and extending its record as TV’s longest-running scripted prime time series.
PARAMOUNT IN TALKS TO SNAG BULLSEYE: Screenwriter Chris Boal’s feature pitch Bullseye is reportedly in a competitive bidding situation. La La Land producer Jordan Horowitz has signed on to produce it via his banner Original Headquarters, Deadline reports. The film will follow the story of paranoid thrillers a la All the President’s Men; this tale is set in the present day and social media will be featured heavily. Paramount Pictures is said to be in deep negotiations for the rights and has already tasked Alex Jackson to develop the film.
VICE STUDIOS TO PARTNER WITH BBC ON BREXIT DOCUMENTARY: Vice Studios is set to partner with the BBC on Inside The Brexit Storm. This follows the BBC’s commission of The Satanic Verses: 30 Years On, a documentary about Salman Rushdie’s controversial novel of the same name.
DISNEY TO HOLD BACK CAPTAIN MARVEL FROM NETFLIX: Captain Marvel, set to drop March 8th, will be the first Disney title to be withheld from Netflix and instead will be offered on Disney+, a streaming service scheduled to launch later this year. The execs know it’s going to hurt: CFO Christine McCarthy says the House of Mouse expects a $150M hit.
