Pretty Woman is one of the most iconic rom-coms of all time, and its star Julia Roberts is claiming that its controversial themes simply wouldn’t be permitted these days. In the film, she plays a prostitute who falls in love with a wealthy client (played by Richard Gere).
In a new profile in the Guardian, the Oscar winner says: “I don’t really think you could make that movie now, right? So many things you could poke a hole in.”
As many have, including one of the eight stars who turned the role down. In 2007, Daryl Hannah, said: “They sold it as a romantic fairytale when in fact it’s a story about a prostitute who becomes a lady by being kept by a rich and powerful man. I think that film is degrading for the whole of womankind.”
Still, she continued: “I don’t think it takes away from people being able to enjoy it.”
